Dr. Richard Bell holds a bachelor of science from Centre College
of Kentucky, Danville, Kentucky, and a doctor of medicine from the
University of Kentucky College of Medicine, Lexington, Kentucky.
His residency in general surgery was completed at the University
of Kentucky College of Medicine/Chandler Medical Center, Lexington,
Ky. Dr. Bell served as a Lieutenant Colonel with the United States
Air Force as a flight surgeon for the 123rd Tac Hospital, Louisville,
Ky., and as Chief of Aeromedical Services at Blytheville Air Force
Base, Blytheville, Arkansas. He also served as Chief of Aeromedical
Services with the Kentucky Air National Guard, Louisville, Ky.
After serving on the University of Kentucky College of Medicine
faculty, Dr. Bell accepted a position as Professor of Surgery at
the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 1985, and
was charged with developing the trauma/critical care program at
Richland Memorial Hospital. He was appointed Chairman of the Department
of Surgery in 1998.
Dr. Bell has received several student and resident teaching awards
including the ATLS Meritorious Service Award, the Gordon L. Hyde
Teaching Award, and the USC School of Medicine Dean’s Medal.
He has served as President of the Association of Surgical Education,
Chairman of the ATLS Subcommittee, and on the Committee on Trauma
of the American College of Surgeons.
